2021-10-22 Friday
It felt very cold tonight. After work, I video-called my younger sister and we discussed going to Liaoning Normal University (辽师) to study tomorrow. Sitting beside the bed, I felt so cold that I got into bed and covered myself with the quilt, but I was still cold. It never occurred to me that I might have a fever. There was no thermometer at hand either, so I curled up and went to sleep.
2021-10-23 Saturday
When I woke up in the morning, my body felt so tired — sore back, aching waist, even my arms hurt. We had agreed to go to Liaoning Normal University, so I still got up, washed up, and got ready to leave. Since yesterday was so cold, I put on more clothes today.
But it didn’t seem to help much. Staying in the cafeteria at the university, I still felt cold. By 3 p.m., I really had no energy left, so I went back to school to sleep. Today I vaguely felt that I had a fever. I bought a thermometer at a pharmacy near the university and measured my temperature back in the dorm — 38 degrees. That was it; I had to rest. I took a tablet of ibuprofen and a Gan Kang cold medicine. (Later I looked it up on Zhihu; it’s said that ibuprofen shouldn’t be taken together with other compound cold medicines 😅)
At 10 p.m., the fever broke and I was back to my healthy state. Based on my past experience, once the fever goes down after taking antipyretics, the cold is over, and I thought I was fine. I fell asleep with peace of mind, planning to go to the lab to play with the computer tomorrow.
2021-10-24 Sunday
At 8 a.m., I measured my temperature. Jeez, I still had a bit of a fever. Let me take a Gan Kang tablet.
It was noon. Hmm…, I felt unwell, but I still wanted to play at the lab. I believed that if I just toughed it out, the cold would pass.
At 4 p.m., no more. I had to go back and lie down. Back in the dorm, I measured my temperature — over 38 degrees again. I took another ibuprofen and lay down. A few hours later, my body recovered a bit. I should be fine this time, right? I played on my phone and got ready for bed.
In the middle of the night, I broke out in a sweat — an enormous amount of sweat. The bedding got soaking wet. I flipped the quilt over to the other side and went back to sleep.
2021-10-25 Monday
Today is a workday, but since I was still plagued by illness, I skipped the morning. I got up (well, technically at noon) in good spirits and thought I was cured, so I happily went to school. I brought the thermometer with me this time to monitor my condition in time.
At 3 p.m., emm…, the familiar feeling again. Touching my own body with my own hands, I could feel it was hot. I found it strange — in all my years, this was the first time I’d had a recurring fever, and I wasn’t coughing, had no runny nose. Neither of the two most obvious cold symptoms was present; it was just a fever. I was a bit panicked.
Today I continued relying on antipyretics to survive. Just like yesterday, I sweated a lot again at night.
2021-10-26 Tuesday
It was the fourth day of the recurring fever. After discussing it with my older and younger sisters, I decided not to tough it out anymore — I was afraid of burning out my body — so I decided to spend money to ward off the disaster.
Since I didn’t know the procedure at the fever clinic, I looked it up on Zhihu in advance.
What’s it like to have a fever and cough during the pandemic and go to the fever clinic?
Records of the fever clinic examination procedure
At the same time, I also asked my friends in the group chat.

In the evening, I asked for leave to leave campus the next day, decided to go to the hospital first thing in the morning, and hoped to come back the same day.
2021-10-27 Wednesday
I got up at 7 a.m. and measured my temperature — it was normal. I grabbed my power bank and set off. Passing the cafeteria, I wanted to eat breakfast, but my sister said you can’t eat within 1 hour before the nucleic acid test. Fine — I went to the supermarket, bought a carton of milk and drank it, and bought a loaf of bread to put in my backpack.
I took bus No. 28 to the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University. After getting off, I had to cross a footbridge, from which the four characters “fever clinic” (发热门诊) were clearly visible. Just head straight to that building.
When I got to the bottom of the building, two nurses in protective suits were sitting at the entrance. First, I showed my ID card and itinerary card, then filled out a form. The form asked whether I had been to any of various places in the past 14 days, and whether anything-or-other had happened in the past 21 days. For someone like me who has spent most of the past year in Dalian, I just selected “No” for all of them. The last item asked whether I had a fever, so I could only select “Yes”.
After filling in the form, I was told to go to Examination Area 1, Examination Room 1 on the 3rd floor. You see, the fever clinic of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University is divided into two areas: Area 1 receives people like me — low-risk people who haven’t left Dalian — and Area 2 receives those who have a travel history to medium- or high-risk regions in the past 21 days.
Inside the examination room, all the nurses were wearing protective suits. First came a scripted declaration: “This is a COVID-19 screening. A total of 4 tests will be done: a blood routine test, a nucleic acid test, a COVID antibody test, and a chest CT scan. The total cost is about 750 yuan, and the tests take about 4 to 6 hours. During this time you cannot leave here; you can only wait here until all the results come out. Do you want to continue?” Hearing all of this, I was quite dumbfounded — was I even allowed to choose to skip it? So I asked, “If I have a fever and want to go to the hospital, I have to go through this process, right?” She said, “Yes. If you want to continue, go to the entrance and register first.”
Right at the top of the stairs on the 3rd floor is the registration desk. The windows were blocked very tightly, so you couldn’t see the people inside and could only communicate through a speaker and a microphone. The ID card sensor was outside the window; patients had to place their card on it themselves, show the payment code, pay, and the registration was done. Then I returned to the examination room.

The nurse asked if I was a student. I said yes. Had I been vaccinated? I said yes. She also asked some travel questions — I just answered them one by one. She asked if I had any drug allergies, and I said no. Then she had me fill in forms: one that all patients fill out, and another exclusive to students — in which everyone was a student. I don’t know why students have to fill in a separate form; it felt like something fishy was going on.
Next came the examinations: the throat-swab nucleic acid test and the blood draw were both on the 3rd floor, while the CT had to be done on the 1st floor. After finishing all three, I went back to the 3rd floor and scrolled through my phone waiting for the results. The results came back at different speeds, roughly like this:

The blood test showed that I was sick
Both antibody tests came back negative — I have no idea what that means. So the vaccine was all for nothing?
Even after the nucleic acid test result came out, I couldn’t leave; I still had to wait for the CT result
A dozen or so people visited the fever clinic that morning — some with fevers caused by gastroenteritis, and others without fevers but with diarrhea or coughing; they went to the outpatient clinic and the doctors there sent them to the fever clinic for screening. This process is really a scam: whatever illness you have, you end up paying an extra 750. While waiting for the results, you’re not allowed to eat or drink — to be precise, you’re not allowed to take off your mask in the 3rd-floor environment. If you want to eat or drink, you can go to the 1st floor and then come back to keep waiting. I was very hungry, but I decided to skip it.
Around noon at 12, my phone notified me that another test result was ready — it should be the CT. I checked the report on my phone.
Scared, I quickly searched for what small nodules in both lungs are
Just after I finished reading the report, a nurse came out of the examination room, called my name, handed me a report sheet, and said I could leave — and asked me to print out all the reports. There was a printing place downstairs, so I printed all the reports. And with that, my trip to the fever clinic came to an end. It took a bit over 3 hours, much faster than I had imagined.
I was hungry, so I stood on the street gnawing at my bread, getting ready to see a doctor at the outpatient clinic in the afternoon. Now I felt the fever starting again. A middle-aged passerby asked me for help, saying something about his phone being dead and needing a taxi or something — I didn’t quite catch it and just shook my head. Dude, the people near a hospital are all patients. Asking a patient to do good deeds is a bit too much, don’t you think?
I ate only half of the bread, because I really couldn’t eat any more, and then went to the outpatient clinic. Inside the hospital, I asked the receptionist which department I should register for, since apart from the fever I had no other discomfort — no coughing, no runny nose. She told me to go to the respiratory department and let the doctor see the reports.
After listening to my description and looking at my reports, the doctor’s basic conclusion was a cold — a viral infection that hadn’t been kept under control. I said I’d been taking Gan Kang and ibuprofen and such, and she said, “That’s useless. After taking ibuprofen you sweat a lot and the fever goes down, but it comes back after a while.” While looking at my reports, she muttered, “Take some Arbidol…”
This medicine costs 46 yuan per box and lasts 2 days — really expensive
She prescribed a week’s worth of medicine. I asked her whether I’d have to go through the fever clinic process again if I came back without the fever going away. She said with great confidence that the fever should go away; if it still didn’t, I’d need a full-body examination.
Four kinds of cold medicine were prescribed, costing over 300 yuan in total. My heart ached for my money.
The fever continued: headache, sore back, aching waist. I was tired. Back in the dorm, I took the medicine and lay down to rest.
At 5 p.m., the fever still wouldn’t go down and reached a new all-time high of 38.9. I hesitated about whether to take an antipyretic — I’d been taking antipyretics for several days straight. After agonizing for a while, I decided to tough it out a bit longer.
Today, because I went to the hospital and slept right after coming back, I hadn’t drunk much water. So I drank water like crazy and peed a lot. It seemed to have some effect: my temperature stopped rising and stayed around 38.6. This gave me more confidence to keep going.
A little while later, I finally received the first caring phone call from my younger sister. I really needed someone to talk to; otherwise it would be too hard to bear. We chatted until 9:30 p.m., and I took my second dose of medicine and got ready to sleep.
Before lying down, I measured my temperature — still over 38 degrees, still headache, still back pain.
2021-10-28 Thursday
At 2 a.m., I still couldn’t sleep. I got up to use the bathroom and measured my temperature — it seemed to start with 37. Instantly I felt like I had no fever. I was so happy, feeling that I had finally made it through. But my head still hurt, so I simply gave up on sleep, opened Bilibili, and watched Martin Morning.
At 3:30 a.m., I fell asleep.
Recovered!!!🎉🎉🎉
Summary
- Antipyretics don’t cure the disease
- Treating a cold also needs the right medicine for the symptoms. During the pandemic, it’s advisable to try different types of cold medicines, after all, going to the hospital is too expensive.
- Before going to the hospital, draft what you want to say; otherwise you’ll always feel you didn’t describe things well enough — just like always feeling you didn’t argue well enough after quarreling with someone.
- I don’t know how to evaluate the fever clinic process — it’s too much of a money pit.
- Having a fever is really miserable; you need care for both your body and your mind.
