Yanmen Pass

If it weren’t for my wedding leave, it’s hard to imagine when I’d ever get a chance to travel — maybe only during a job change gap.

For our first trip together, my wife chose Shanxi. I looked it up online and the sights there are pretty good too. The two places I was most looking forward to were Yanmen Pass and Hukou Waterfall.

Everything I know about Yanmen Pass comes from The Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (Tianlong Babu) — I wanted to see what the place where Xiao Yuanshan jumped off the cliff looked like.

Hukou Waterfall is a natural wonder, listed among National Geographic’s “50 Places of a Lifetime”.

We booked a zero-shopping pure tour group on Tongcheng Travel — six days, five nights, 1680 yuan per person, which seemed acceptable.

Day 1

Departing from Dalian, a one-and-a-half-hour flight brought us to Taiyuan Wusu Airport.

It was raining in Taiyuan that day, and the temperature was low — only around 10°C. Landing in shorts nearly froze me to death. Braving the drizzle, I went to Uniqlo and bought a jacket.

Cat’s ear noodles — nowhere near as good as gedou soup; salty and unpalatable

Kaolaolao (steamed oat rolls) — first time seeing these; also a noodle dish, mediocre

Aged vinegar cola — think vinegar mixed with cola; awful

Takeout version of “dip skewers” — a budget mala skewer, possibly unsanitary

Yogurt — pretty OK

Yanmen Pass

The Free Encyclopedia: https://vpn.1881997.xyz/https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Yanmen Pass, also known as Xijing Pass, is located in the Yanmen Mountains, about 20 km north of Dai County, Xinzhou, Shanxi, China. It is an important pass on the Great Wall, and together with Ningwu Pass and Pianguan Pass, they are known as the “Three Outer Passes”. It is now a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit and a National 5A tourist attraction. Along with Hangu Pass, Xianxia Pass, and Jianmen Pass, it is one of China’s four great ancient passes.

The Yanmen Mountains are named so because two mountains face each other from east and west, shaped like a gate, with wild geese flying through the gap. Yanmen Pass sits atop Yanmen Mountain and is considered the foremost of the “Nine Fortresses of the World”, guarding the north-south traffic artery of Shanxi and cutting off an important route from the northern plateau to North China. To its east lie Zijing Pass and Daoma Pass; to its west, Ningwu Pass and Pianguan Pass — all important passes on the Ming Great Wall (inner Great Wall).

At the end of the Warring States period, King Wuling of Zhao built the Great Wall and established Yanmen Commandery, stationing Li Mu there to guard against Xiongnu attacks. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Xijing Pass was one of the “Three Passes of the Northern Court”. In the Tang Dynasty, a pass city was built to prevent Turkic incursions to the south. During the Yuan Dynasty, Yanmen Pass was gradually abandoned and the pass city destroyed. In the 7th year of Hongwu (1374) of the Ming Dynasty, the Marquis of Ji’an, Lu Xiang, restored the ancient Xijing Pass and built a new pass city 5 km east of the original site. Later, in the 15th year of Wanli (1587) and the 6th year of Tongzhi (1867) of the Qing Dynasty, major repairs were made to the pass city and the nearby Great Wall sections.

Throughout Chinese history, Yanmen Pass has been the frontline fortress where the Central Plains resisted the southward incursions of northern nomadic peoples, and many famous generals built immortal achievements here. Li Mu of Zhao lured the enemy deep and routed over 100,000 Xiongnu cavalry. In the Han Dynasty, Huo Qubing, Wei Qing, and Li Guang successively marched north from Yanmen Pass against the Xiongnu. When Emperor Yang of Sui was trapped at Yanmen Pass, Li Shimin proposed a ruse that drove off the Turkic troops. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, the Shatuo (a branch of the Western Turks) noble Li Keyong captured Yanmen Pass, laying the foundation for the Later Tang. During the Song Dynasty, Yang Ye and his son Yang Yanzhao both defended this pass, engaging in many fierce battles with the Liao army.

Yingxian Wooden Pagoda

The Free Encyclopedia: https://vpn.1881997.xyz/https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/

The Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple, commonly known as the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda, is located in Ying County, Shuozhou, Shanxi, China. It is the oldest and tallest wooden pagoda still standing in China. Its exact construction date is unknown, but its architectural style and related artifacts confirm it was built during the Liao Dynasty, with multiple repairs in the Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The pagoda has survived several major earthquakes and was even shelled during the warlord wars of 1926, yet it has never toppled. It stands 67.31 meters tall, with its main structure entirely of wood. Viewed from outside it appears to have five stories, but inside each of the first to fourth stories there is a hidden mezzanine level serving as the base for the story above, topped with an iron spire. Each story’s inner chamber houses Buddha statues; the first story contains a roughly 10-meter-tall Sakyamuni statue, with murals on the inner walls. Due to the pagoda’s extremely complex structure, 54 different types of dougong (bracket sets) are used throughout. Debate over its restoration plan continued from the 1970s until a plan was finally settled in 2013. In 1961, it was designated a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

The Yungang Grottoes are located at the southern foot of Mount Wuzhou in Yungang Village, Yungang Town, Datong, Shanxi, China. They were mainly carved between the 2nd year of Xing’an (453) and the 19th year of Taihe (495) of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and are the first large grotto complex in China sponsored by the imperial family. The complex is divided into eastern, central, and western sections. The eastern caves are dominated by pagodas, also known as pagoda caves; the central “Tanyao Five Caves” are the earliest and most imposing; the western caves are slightly later, mostly created after the Northern Wei moved its capital to Luoyang. Carved into the cliff along the north bank of the Wuzhou River, the grottoes stretch about 1 km east to west, with 51 major caves (about 20 well-preserved), over 1,100 niches of various sizes, and more than 51,000 Buddha statues of all sizes. The largest statue is 17 meters tall, while the smallest is only 2 centimeters. The largest cave is Cave 6 (carved during Emperor Xiaowen’s reign), rising 20 meters from floor to ceiling.

Above and behind the cliff face, the remains of a Ming Dynasty military fortress, also known as Yungang Fort, are preserved.

In 1961, the Yungang Grottoes were listed among the first batch of National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units by the State Council. In 2001, they were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

First built during the Northern Wei Dynasty, the existing buildings were rebuilt in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The entire temple is built into the hillside of Cuifeng Mountain, supported by 27 wooden beams that hold up all the main buildings, appearing to hang in mid-air from afar — hence its name. The temple comprises 40 rooms of wooden frame construction, with corridors and plank roads connecting the main structures. In 1982, it was listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit.

Mount Wutai: Shuxiang Temple, Luohou Temple, Guanghua Temple

Mount Wutai: https://vpn.1881997.xyz/https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/五台山

Mount Wutai is located in the northeastern corner of Wutai County, Xinzhou, northeastern Shanxi, China. In Han Buddhism tradition it is regarded as the bodhimanda (seat of enlightenment) of Manjusri Bodhisattva, earning the title “Golden Wutai” and ranking first among China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains. It was among the first batch of national key scenic areas and national forest parks designated by the State Council, and is the foremost of China’s ten famous mountains, now a 5A scenic area.

Mount Wutai is not a single mountain but a cluster of peaks sitting on the “roof of North China”, covering a scenic area of 2,837 km² with a maximum elevation of 3,058 meters. Five peaks (East Terrace Wanghai, South Terrace Jinxiu, Central Terrace Cuiyan, West Terrace Guayue, and North Terrace Yedou) surround the whole region; their summits are flat and treeless, resembling stacked earth terraces — hence the name.

Mount Wutai is the only Buddhist site in China where green temples (Han Buddhism) and yellow temples (Tibetan Buddhism) coexist in harmony, with Han, Mongolian, and Tibetan peoples sharing the site peacefully. It is said to have once had 128 temples; 47 remain today, 39 within the terraces and 8 outside, many built by imperial decree with visits from emperors of several dynasties. Famous ones include Xiantong Temple, Tayuan Temple, Pusading, Nanshan Temple, Dailuoding, Guangji Temple, and Wanfoge. On June 26, 2009, it was inscribed on the World Heritage List at the 33rd World Heritage Session in Seville, Spain.

Qianfo Nunnery, located on Phoenix Mountain west of Xi County, Linfen, Shanxi, China, is also known as Xiao Xitian. In 1996 it was listed among the fourth batch of National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units.

Xiao Xitian consists of an upper and a lower courtyard. The upper courtyard’s main buildings include the Mahavira Hall, Manjusri Hall, Samantabhadra Hall, North Pole Hall, and Mavang Shrine; the lower courtyard has the Wuliang Hall, Weituo Hall, Moyun Pavilion, Bagua Pavilion, and bell and drum towers.

The Mahavira Hall in the upper courtyard contains more than 1,900 clay sculptures of various sizes, masterpieces of 17th-century hanging sculpture — the finest hanging sculptures in China. Carving began in the late Ming Chongzhen era and was completed during the Qing Shunzhi era.

In the game Black Myth: Wukong, the Mahavira Hall of Xiao Xitian is the filming location for the Third Chapter’s Yellow Brow King domain, where in the “Three Thousand Blissful Small Worlds” there are hundreds of miniature arhats.

Hukou Waterfall

The Free Encyclopedia: https://vpn.1881997.xyz/https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Hukou Waterfall is a natural waterfall formed where the middle reaches of the Yellow River flow through the Jin-Shaan Grand Canyon. To the east is Flame Mountain at the southern end of the Lüliang Mountains, near Ji County, Linfen, Shanxi; to the west is Huanglong Mountain, near Hukou Township, Yichuan County, Yan’an, Shaanxi. It is about 25 km southwest of Ji County’s county seat. The waterfall is 30 meters wide and about 50 meters deep, with a maximum waterfall surface of 30,000 m². Along with Detian Waterfall (on the China-Vietnam border, part of the Pearl River system) and Huangguoshu Waterfall in Guizhou, it ranks among China’s most famous waterfalls.

When the rolling Yellow River reaches this point, the flood of water more than 500 meters wide is suddenly constricted by cliffs on both sides — wide above and narrow below — churning and pouring down a 50-meter drop with tremendous force, as if being poured from a gigantic pot. The river mouth narrows like the mouth of a pot, hence the name “Hukou” (pot mouth) Waterfall. The ancient Chinese classic Shangshu’s “Tribute of Yu” says: “The river whirls, as if in a pot.” The two famous wonders of “sailing boats on dry land” and “smoke rising from the water” are rare sights.

Guangsheng Temple is located on and below Mount Huo, 17 km northeast of Hongtong County, Linfen, Shanxi, China, and is a famous Buddhist temple. The renowned Buddhist canon Zhaocheng Jin Tripitaka was produced at Guangsheng Temple. In 1961, it was listed among the first batch of National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units.

Feihong Pagoda, the landmark building of Guangsheng Temple, was built from the 10th year of Zhengde to the 6th year of Jiajing (1515-1527) of the Ming Dynasty. It is a typical Ming brick pavilion-style pagoda and the largest glazed pagoda in China. Standing in front of the temple’s central axis, it was rebuilt on the site of a Yuan Dynasty pagoda. The octagonal pagoda appears to have thirteen stories, stands 47.31 meters tall, and its outer walls are decorated with glazed tiles of various colors; the glazed railings, celestial beings, animals, and dougong brackets are exquisitely detailed and splendid.

Guangsheng Temple wasn’t originally on our itinerary, but it probably was on other group members’ itineraries, so we hitched a ride.

This stop required an extra ticket, but as the tour guide said, “I wouldn’t advise you to spend the ticket to go inside Yingxian Wooden Pagoda — it looks the same inside. But Guangsheng Temple’s Feihong Pagoda is magnificent and worth a look.”

Wang Family Compound

The Free Encyclopedia: https://vpn.1881997.xyz/https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/

The Wang Family Compound, located in Jingsheng Town, 12 km east of Lingshi County, Jinzhong, Shanxi, China, is one of China’s largest residential complexes and the largest well-preserved architectural complex in Shanxi. It is an important representative of Qing Dynasty residential architecture and was listed as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit in 2006.

The Wang family of Jingsheng founded the compound. Their ancestral home was in Langya, later migrating west to Taiyuan, Shanxi. In the early Southern Song Dynasty, family member Wang Shi moved south from Taiyuan to Gouyutan Village in Lingshi County. In the 2nd year of Huangqing of the Yuan Dynasty (1313), Wang Chengzhai led the family to Jingsheng Village to farm, settling there for over 600 years. From the early Ming Dynasty onward, more Wang family members took up business and it gradually grew. From the early to mid Qing Dynasty, the family’s business expanded from traditional grain and horse trading to the lucrative monopoly of salt and tea, extending from Hedong salt affairs to the Lianghuai salt region, amassing great wealth and becoming one of the four great families of Lingshi County. Today’s compound was continuously expanded during the Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, and Jiaqing reigns of the Qing Dynasty.

In the 3rd year of Xianfeng (1853), the Taiping Army captured Yangzhou and killed Wang Hongjian of the 21st generation, causing huge financial losses. The Jingsheng Wang family began to decline, though they remained the richest family in Jingsheng until the outbreak of the War of Resistance.
