Went to see My Sister with Xiao Shuangshuang 😊
I’m probably not cut out for watching movies in a cinema — I get sleepy, can’t remember the plot, and can’t rewind. 😅
Why do today’s movies all love to use dialects? To feel down-to-earth? It drives me crazy.

My Sister
While having lunch with my little sister, we also talked about my elder sister, and I told her about the fragments of memory I still have of my elder sister.
When I had just started elementary school, I was probably in first grade, and my elder sister should have been in sixth grade. I only remember having to go home for lunch every day. My elder sister rode her bike with me sitting on the rear seat, feeling the gentle noon breeze of summer, and we’d be home in no time. Back then the big trees on both sides of the road were still there, and the road was shaded — it was wonderful. Imagine a sixth-grader having to carry a first-grader around; it was no easy task, haha.
Xiao Shuang said to me, “You should go share these feelings with your elder sister; telling me is useless 😅”
Fine, it really is useless.
Actually, there are a few more little stories I still remember; let me take this opportunity to write them down.
When I was little, two ham sausages cost 50 cents. My elder sister and I would buy two every time, splitting them evenly with one for each of us first. Almost every time I finished mine first, then ate the rest of my elder sister’s. We had a silent understanding: I ate fast, she ate slowly, leaving some for me.
The little shops at the school gate usually came in pairs, and the students would silently divide them into a boys’ shop and a girls’ shop. Naturally, my elder sister always took me to the girls’ shop to buy snacks. One day at noon she asked what I wanted to eat. Since I had never been to the boys’ shop, and I saw that the bread on the boys’ shop’s shelf looked quite nice, I said I wanted that. Girls were usually too embarrassed to go into the boys’ shop — that’s just how that era was, haha — so my elder sister asked a male classmate to buy the bread for me.
One day at noon, after having lunch at home, I headed to school, walking with my elder sister and her classmates. Somehow the topic of money came up, and my elder sister said “forgot to bring money”. The moment I heard that, I was upset — if she had no money, what would I eat! No way, we had to go back to get it. I sat down on the ground and started crying. My elder sister and her classmates tried every way to comfort me, telling me they were just teasing me and that she did bring money, even showing me the money. But I wouldn’t believe it — I insisted we had to go back to get the money today, or I wouldn’t go to school at all! My elder sister had no choice but to go home and get the money. To this day I still don’t know whether she really forgot her money; anyway, that’s just how dramatic I could be! 😪
We did quarrel, of course, though probably only when we were little. Only one scene remains in my memory — it must have been when we were very young. My elder sister and I stood on the kang (heatable brick bed), and I beat her chest with my little fists, haha. I’ve forgotten everything about what led up to it and what came after.
My elder sister and I have almost no photos together — we don’t like taking pictures. I only found this one photo with level-10 skin smoothing in our online album.

I’m not an only child; I don’t know the joys of being one, but I deeply know how important my elder sister was to my growth. That’s why I’ve always felt that having two children in a family is very necessary.
Dialectics tells us that everything has two sides. That is to say, my elder sister’s careful care also had some influence on the kind of personality I have today. I have no opinions of my own — that’s a big flaw. One evening my little sister asked, “Do you want to eat this?”, and I hesitated. She said with some impatience, “Go or don’t go, just say it!” The thing is, I really had no idea either 😅
My Sister

Now about the movie. Before watching it, I hadn’t seen any trailers or anything. It was just that my little sister wanted to watch it, and I had also heard it had a good reputation, so we watched it. At first I thought it was a story about parents dying and a teenage elder sister raising her little brother alone. Actually, it’s not like that.
I’m not good with words, and I can’t write good movie reviews. I’ll just ramble a bit.
First, I won’t comment on the acting — as long as it’s not particularly bad, I can’t tell the difference between good and great. I don’t know what this movie was trying to say; I can’t summarize it. Let me just talk about a few topics I noticed that are worth discussing. Regarding the problem of favoring boys over girls: I think it no longer exists around me. In the countryside of my hometown, I’ve never seen a family that favored boys over girls. Maybe this social problem still exists elsewhere, but I wouldn’t know.
On the question of whether the elder sister should raise her little brother, I chatted a bit with my little sister after the movie. She said she wished the elder sister had just signed the papers — why did the ending have to be this way, why did it have to morally blackmail the elder sister? I don’t think this is a moral issue; it’s a matter of personal feelings. Whether the elder sister raises her little brother or not, she shouldn’t be judged from a moral standpoint. The elder sister and the little brother had barely met and had no feelings for each other at all. The elder sister had dreams; pursuing her dreams and placing her little brother for adoption was perfectly fine. But the thing is, she did have feelings — didn’t she come to love her little brother through living with him? You can’t have everything in this world; there’s no way around it. Since she couldn’t bear to part with her little brother emotionally, she had to accept the fact that she couldn’t realize her dreams. There’s nothing wrong with what the elder sister did. If we ourselves can’t be noble, we can’t forbid others from being noble.
About the elder sister’s love life, I don’t know how to understand it. I feel that the mainstream social value nowadays is that love is worthless, and career and dreams are what count. I don’t know how to evaluate this either. I’ve always resisted this way of thinking — can’t one of two people give up something for the other? Things can’t be given up, but people can. I’m still young and can’t appreciate why people think this way. What’s scary is that most people think it’s right. It’s like how everyone believes houses will go up in price and desperately saves up to buy one; because so many people buy, houses really do go up. By the same logic, when everyone believes love is worthless and enough people think that way, it really becomes worthless.
My Little Sister
I don’t have a little sister; for me, the word “little sister” is a special term, a proper noun. My good friends and I have reached a consensus on this.

Why mention my little sister in an article titled My Sister? Because this is my April pinned post, so she must be in it.
Today I read a little story in a book.
A couple was captured by a vicious gangster, who said only one of them could survive and made them play rock-paper-scissors — whoever won would live. The couple agreed to both throw rock. In the end, the boy lived and the girl died, because the boy threw scissors and the girl threw paper.
So, what do you think?
What do I think? To be honest, in made-up little stories like this, I always tend to believe the woman is the greater one. So the real situation might be: the boy chose scissors so that the girl would win, and the girl naturally saw through the boy’s intention and threw paper, deliberately losing.
Getting along with my little sister is a process of thinking and reflecting; I won’t record the details for now.
My little sister and I still don’t have a single photo together. Let’s put it on the agenda right away and try to have it appear in next month’s blog.
